off to prudhoe bay

GeoTagged, [N64.83032, E147.84868]

after spending a night at Randy's place (a local motorcyclist), we went on a search for a bike shop to get ready for the run up to prudhoe bay. new rear tires, filter change, etc. it's 1000 miles roundtrip on dirt! it's me and Peter!
Sean and klaus go to Denali.
I won't be able to post anything until we are back around Fairbanks (sat/sun).
see ya later...

The Mighty Yukon

we have to use the 'George Black', to get across the river to go to town and back to our temporary homestead.

in Dawson

Dawson, the center of one of the greatest gold rushes on history, is still today an intriguing place. unpaved streets which turn to mud tracks in rain; boardwalks you walk on instead of the mud; building sinking slowly in the permafrost ground. saloon where the nights end in bright daylight (sunset is around midnight). other bars where the drinking ends because of good old fashioned bar fights.
I shouldn't forget to mention the sourtoe club which involves an old shrunken human toe (think of an old man's toe, all yellowed...).

on the campbell highway

it can't get any more remote than that. partially paved but mostly a gravel road it goes from watson lake to carmacks passing 2 real ghost towns. traffic was minimal to say the least. 9 cars in two days on 500 miles.

arrived in the Klondike!!

motorcycling of the finest order!
the scenery is so beautiful and the road goes right through it!
steeply sloped mountains capped by ice and snow fields or cut up by glaciers.
along the road beaver ponds alternating with meadows and lakes. then for miles a curtain of spruce on either side. the highway gently curving and snaking up and down through the terrain.
the traffic is hardly mentionable. we counted literally almost more bears than cars. every dozen of miles we would see black bears on the shoulder and once there was a grizzly.
at 5 we called it quits and set camp above a lake. no one around but us and a few moose (I guess). the lake water smooth as glass, the air quiet except for the chattering complaint of a raven.
